My Reading Journey

If you were to ask me I would say I have always loved reading, maybe not outwardly and definitely not to the extent my mum does but there has always been a fondness, particularly for fiction.

There has never been a time in my life where I could say I had nothing to read, my mum quickly introduced me to the world of literature and I haven’t looked back. First it was Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes then We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, and soon it was Pippi Longstocking, The Magic Faraway Tree (you have no idea how excited I am for this movie) and Harry Potter

When I could eventually read myself I started with the classics, Billie B Brown, Our Australian Girl, and everyones favourite year 5 book, Wonder. But it wasn’t long before I graduated to Harry Potter fanfics (a truly wonderous time in my life). Highschool was a turbulent time for my reading journey, I can’t say I’m a fan of Greek tragedy or Shakespeare but alas it must be done. I think I read maybe 2 books across Year 11 and 12 outside of the required school novels because it felt like a chore, something that was taking up more of my time on top of school, sports, friends, family and my part-time jobs (if you can call them that).

As I’ve gotten older, I have found a love for fantasy and for romance, romantasy if you will. ACOTAR, Fourth Wing and The Cruel Prince were some of my favourite series in the last couple years. Although one of my favourite reads has to be The Perks of Being a Wallflower (a must for any young adult).

Now, for the reason I have started this blog: as an almost 20 year old and an aspiring medical student (then doctor hopefully), I am finding myself inadequately prepared to take the GAMSAT (Graduate Medical School Admissions Test). My reddit findings tell me I need to be more well read then my mum (a feat none can accomplish) along with exceptional writing skills and a vocab better than the Collins Dictionary. Hence, this blog.

Here, I am envisioning a space where I can share my honest thoughts, quelms and reflections on the things I am reading, which (un)fortunately will consist of more than just my latest romantasy find. I am hoping to discover more of the classics (the “real” ones), poetry, journal and news articles, history and to stay informed on current affairs.

So, if this seems like your jam (or if you’d like a laugh at my expense) I beg of you to read on, and I promise only my raw and authentic reactions to the compelling literature that comes my way. On the list…A Short History of Nearly Everything, Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity and Poverty, and one I am personally very excited for How to Win Every Argument: The Use and Abuse of Logic.
